Planthoppers of Costa Rica
One of my main areas of interests is planthopper diversity in the Caribbean basin. Currently, survey work is being done in Florida, Jamaica, and Costa Rica to document known and unknown species on palms in the region. Future efforts will expand to other countries in the Caribbean. While much of the taxa in Florida is known, recently the species Petrusa epilepsis (Flatidae) was found to be established and an undescribed species of Colpoptera sp. (Nogodinidae) has also been detected, both originating from somewhere in the Caribbean. However, most of the new species being documented are from Jamaica with three new species of insect being discovered in 2019; Oecleus sp. (Cixiidae), Agoo sp. (Derbidae), and Neodawnaria sp. (Derbidae). In Costa Rica from 2018 to 2019, over 10 new species of planthopper have been discovered, with two representing new genera.
